“You Ought to Be teachers…”

Hands of a man holding a book

In Hebrews 5:12 we read “…by this time you ought to be teachers…” The writer of Hebrews was of the divinely inspired opinion that these Christians were stunted. They had not reached the milestone that they should have been at by this time. These Christians were still being students when they ought to have been teaching. What was the solution? “…You have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God…” In other words, go back to your first love (Rev. 2:4-5), go back to first principles!

Why? Had they forgotten? I am of the opinion no, but they had taken that knowledge for granted and it had grown cold. They needed a refresher (2 Peter 1:13). We all need refreshers. I make it a personal habit to go over first principles on an almost weekly basis. Not because I need to learn them again, but because they are our foundation!

There is always a need for teachers of all capacities. Perhaps Hebrews 5:12 applies to you, but you’re not sure where to start. Let me suggest a few things.

  • Know how one becomes a Christian
  • Know how we establish authority
  • Know what the church is
  • Know the worship of the church

If you know all this great! If you only know how to become a Christian, Great you can teach. If not, go back study up (2 Tim. 2:15).

Over the next few weeks to help you in this I will be taking each of those bullet points and expanding on each of those topics. The hope and aim is that you can take the material, study it, and teach it to someone else.

Have a great day!
