Why Study The Gospel of Luke?

Once a month, we have been examining the unique contribution each book of the New Testament makes to the whole of Scripture. This month, we are going to examine the gospel according to Luke by asking why we should study it.

We should study Luke to learn about Jesus’s perfect humanity. Luke’s gospel presents Jesus as the perfect Son of Man who came to save men. Luke records Jesus’ childhood, His friendships, and His emotional highs and lows. Luke shows us our Lord, while still fully God, was indeed fully man.

We should study Luke to see that God’s plan always included the Gentiles. Luke’s genealogy goes back to Adam, the father of all mankind. Luke is the only gospel that quotes Isaiah’s prophecy of all flesh seeing God’s salvation. Luke’s great commission is specific that the gospel is to be preached to all nations. Luke clearly shows us that God always planned to save both Jews and Gentiles.

We should study Luke to understand that the gospel is for all. Luke includes people from all walks of life in his gospel account. We have tax collectors, sinners, poor, rich, and many others included. This is to stress the universal scope of Jesus’ mission and the universal audience of the gospel.

Why should we study Luke? So we may better understand the Son of Man who came to save all men.
