Who Is The Holy Spirit?

2 Corinthians 13:14

The Holy Spirit is the least understood person of the Godhead, yet we interact with Him almost every day. Tonight, we want to take a bird’s eye view of who the Holy Spirit is. We will consider His Deity, His work in revelation, and how He guides us today.

The Holy Spirit Is One of the Godhead Three:

To begin, we need to know that the Holy Spirit is God. He is not a glorified “it” or “thing,” nor is He is a mere “influence.” He is a fully divine person that exists co-equally and co-eternally with God the Father and God the Son.

All three are called God:

  • Yahweh is called God 1 Corinthians 8:6.
  • Jesus is called God John 1:1.
  • The Holy Spirit is called God Acts 5:3-4.

What is said of Deity is said of the Holy Spirit:

  • God the Father and God the Son are said to dwell in Christians (Ephesians 3:17; John 14:22-23) so is the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 1:14).
  • God raised Jesus from the dead (Acts 13:30) – The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11) – and Jesus had power within Himself to raise Himself from the grave (John 10:11)

The Holy Spirit is one of the three divine beings that exist in perfect harmony and unity within the Godhead. He is a Divine Being, co-existent and co-eternal with the Father and the Son.

The Holy Spirit is the Revealer of Truth:

Sometimes the question is asked, what does the Holy Spirit do? We understand the work of God the Father, and we understand the work of God the Son, but sometimes we get a little fuzzy about The Holy Spirit. We see from the Scriptures that the Holy Spirit’s primary role is the revealer of truth to mankind. Without Him, we would have no record of the marvelous events of the Scriptures.

  • Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to the Apostles in John 16:13-14, “However, when He the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” It is and was the Holy Spirit who guided the Apostles and gave them all knowledge in the early days of Christianity.
  •  Peter tells us that no Scripture came because men figured it out by their own reasoning but by the Holy Spirit directing them to reveal it. 2 Peter 1:20-21 reads, “knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
  • And Paul tells us that it is the Holy Spirit who is able to reveal the mind of God. We are dependent upon the Spirit’s work for us to have any information about God or His will. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:10-11, “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man know the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.”

The Holy Spirit Guides Through the Revealed Message:

There can be some confusion on how the Holy Spirit guides and directs a Christian. Some make this harder than it needs to be and more confusing than it has to be. If we look at simply what the Bible says about what the Spirit does and compare it to what the word of God does, we can see the relationship between the two.

The Holy Spirit guides the Christian today through the revealed message. This can be said because it was the Holy Spirit who gave the message, to begin with. Let’s consider a few things that the Bible says both of the word and the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit The Word of God
2 Corinthians 3:6who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”Gives LifeJames 1:18 “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.”
John 3:6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Born Of1 Peter 1:23having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.”
Titus 3:5 “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”SalvationJames 1:21Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
1 Corinthians 6:11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”SanctifiesJohn 17:17Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
John 6:63   “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.”Makes AlivePsalm 119:50 “This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life.”

A Final Application:

We can show our appreciation for God the Holy Spirit and give Him His due honor and glory if we seek to abide in the word revealed. If we do so, we will be guided by The Spirit because we are filled with His work, the Scriptures. Consider Ephesians 5:18-19 we are filled with the Spirit when are letting the word of Christ dwell within us (Colossians 3:16).
