Is Christ Divided?

“I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

1 Corinthians 1:10

Unity is to be a mark of Christians. As the verse above shows it is something God has commanded his people to have. However, when we look around at the religious world we don’t see that. What we see is Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Lutheran, etc. On down the line. In fact, it is estimated that there are over 45,000 different denominational bodies currently in the world. We have to ask, is this what Jesus wanted? Does this fit in with     1 Corinthians 1:10?

Let us look at a couple things Jesus and His Apostles had to say about unity and His followers. In John 17:23 Jesus is praying on behalf of all believers and look what He has to say here. “I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.” Part of how the world is to know that God really did send His son and that we are true followers of Jesus is that we all would be united as one. Also, there is Ephesians 4:1-6:

“Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”

Again, God’s people are to be one just as God is one and just as there is but one church, one faith, one Lord, one baptism, etc. Just as God and His faith is not divided we are not to be divided. But how do we achieve this unity that God wants from us and is shown in the Bible?

We can achieve the unity God wants by simply going back to what God has said in His word. Too simple? Never. God has plainly spoken for our benefit. If we simply commit ourselves to what God has revealed we can obtain the unity that God desires. The Scriptures He has given us are all sufficient (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and contain everything pertaining to life and godliness ( 2 peters 1:3).

Read, study, be molded by the word of God.  Do good and honor Him.
